Betty Jane Roberts Walton

June 9, 1930 ~ September 2, 2020 (age 90)

Obituary

We will forever celebrate the life of Betty Jane Roberts Walton, age 90 who passed into eternity on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. She was a dedicated and loving wife to the late Stanley Walton for nearly 69 years. Her commitment to  family was second only to her dedication to her Christian faith. She attended the South Green Street Church of Christ until her health no longer permitted and was at times a Sunday School teacher there. She took great satisfaction in knowing all of her immediate family members were baptized into the christian faith. She was known for her intellect, her knack for understanding all things medical, her snappy sense of humor and her penchant for wit.

Betty spent her entire life on the farm established initially as the Franklin Farm in the late 1700’s and later combined with the Roberts Farm to become “Walton’s Lowlands”. She, as well as her mother, born in the house built for her grandmother “Ma Kate” in the late 1870’s. She felt privileged to live out the remainder of her life in her home and passed from this life in the same room where she was born.

On June 16th 1951, she eloped with the love of her life Stanley Walton of Monroe, Ky., the product of a Center Kentucky High School romance and kept their marriage secret for 6 months. She later put aside the career she loved as an elementary teacher in the 1960’s to raise her children and support her family in the capacity of nurturer and educator.  Her life of dedication to running a farming household included the provision of delicious meals highlighted by scores of tall fluffy hand-cut biscuits, butterscotch pies and layered chocolate caramel cakes, many of which were pursued hotly by church and family members alike at every potluck.  She strongly supported her children’s educational endeavors and interests in the Metcalfe County school system as room mother and 4-H parent for two decades.

Betty cherished her daughter-in-law Lori and her son-in-law Tony. She was blessed with four granddaughters of whom she was enormously proud. She loved the husbands they brought home for her to meet. She also provided care to children from Potter’s Children’s Home in summer, treating those children as her own. She loved her neighbors and her friends mourning many who passed on before her.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Ray Roberts and Mable Franklin Roberts of Three Springs Kentucky; her husband, Stanley Walton; daughter, Robin Gordon Walton; her brother, Ray Gordon Roberts, and her sister-in-law, Gordie Roberts. She is survived by her son, Shane Walton (Lori) and daughter, Melissa Walton-Shirley (Tony); her granddaughters, Kate Seeley (John), Aaron Gregory (Joe), Stephanie Gilpin (Andrew) and Allie Walton.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the Hosparus team, Dr. William Travis, Graves Gilbert Clinic, and her caregivers Brenda Page, Chelsey Sadler and Sharon NeSmith. They would also like to express heartfelt gratitude  to the personnel at the emergency department at TJ Samson community hospital for providing care to both Stanley and Betty Walton in recent and past years inclusive of Dr. Lee Carter, Dr. Kara Gilkey, Dr. Kyle Kiser and Dr. Ronnie Pridemore.

A private graveside memorial will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020. The service will be live streamed from the Winn Funeral Home Facebook page at 2:00 p.m. Her service is under the direction of Winn Funeral home.  Memorial donations may be directed to the mission fund at the South Green Street church of Christ or Potter Children’s home in Bowling Green Kentucky.
