Richard “Dick” Edmond Rogers, 76 of Bishop, CA, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at his home.
Dick was born to Richard Caldwell Rogers and Gladys Olivia (Wilson) Rogers on December 1st, 1940 in Middlesboro, Kentucky. His childhood was spent living in numerous communities in Kentucky including Horse Cave, Glasgow, Danville, and Lancaster, as well as Lakeland, Florida. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1958, continuing to study Accounting at the University of Louisville where he was recognized in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Accounting in 1962 as the Valedictorian of his class in the School of Business. During summers Dick worked with Kentucky Utilities in the field and cultivated a life-long appreciation for hard work, dedication, and reliability.
Following college, Dick accepted an accounting job in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Land of Enchantment would become his home for the next half-century. Within a few months of settling in Albuquerque, Dick returned to Louisville to marry the love of his life, Nancy Jane (Wallingford) Rogers and they started a family with two children, David and Patricia.
Dick served in the United States Air Force New Mexico Air National Guard from November 1962 until December 1968, starting as an Airman and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant. When his reserve unit was activated, Dick served 18 months active duty as a finance officer in Seoul, South Korea in support of Air Force Operations during the Viet Nam War.
43 Years of his professional career was invested in accounting and finance operations for Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. Dick was particularly proud of his ability to comprehend and work with complex financial data and proved to be a valuable part of Sandia’s finance division.
Traveling was very important throughout his life. From the many fishing trips and family vacations he enjoyed with his wife and children in the 70’s and 80’s, to the wonderful trips abroad he took with his wife to Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Hungary, and Austria, Dick immersed himself in the history and cultural relevance of every place he visited.
In many ways Dick was a life-long student. Fascinated with history, politics, science, and technology, he was always learning and absorbing information. Dick always remained very well informed through local, national, and international news, books on a variety of topics, business and financial publications, documentaries, and opportunities to expand his knowledge. In addition to non-fiction, he enjoyed watching movies and TV programs that contained a relevant historical, scientific, or political premise.
Following his retirement, Dick enjoyed volunteering in hospital settings and served the Presbyterian Hospital system in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After the death of his wife, he moved to be closer to family and joined the volunteers at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop, California. Dick was the Vice President of the Hospital Auxiliary and pioneered the vital Emergency Room Volunteer program as the first volunteer to serve in that capacity at Northern Inyo. As a part of the volunteer team at the hospital, Dick was always counted on as a reliable, go-to person with a kind spirit, a warm smile, and a gracious heart.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Nancy Jane (Wallingford) Rogers, in 2009, as well as by his mother in 2002 and father in 1997.
He is survived by his son David Wilson Rogers and daughter-in-law Kimberly of Carlsbad, New Mexico; daughter Patricia Jo (Rogers) Cook and son-in-law Randy of Bishop, California; grandchildren Jonathan, Celeste, Josh, Jacob, Celica, Tanin, Rachel, and Randi Jo, as well as his beloved sister, Jeanne (Rogers) Daniel and brother-in-law JC, of Sachse, Texas; local cousins, Ben and John Rogers of Glasgow, and a close family friend, Sam Terry of Glasgow; as well as many adoring friends, co-workers, church family, and loved ones.
There will be a graveside service held Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery, under the direction of Winn Funeral Home.
