Joseph F. Hishmeh age 78 of Silver Spring, Md., passed away Friday, November 15, 2013 at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland after a lengthy battle with emphysema.
Born in Ramallah, Palestine on April 2, 1935, Mr. Hishmeh was the fifth of ten children. He Came to the United States in the 1960's. He was a long time resident of Cave City, Kentucky and was a cook at his brother's restaurant, The Sahara Steak House, for many years. Mr. Hishmeh was also the owner of The Main Attraction, a clothing store with locations in Glasgow and Horse Cave both in Kentucky. He lived in Florida for several years and then moved to Maryland in 1991. Mr. Hishmeh was an excellent cook and well known for his sense of humor. Joe also worked as a contractor in audience mail for the Voice of America in Washington, D.C. Though health limited his mobility in later years, he was always devoted to the care of his faithful companions, Schnauzers named Abby, Tessa and Ace.
Mr. Hishmeh was preceded in death by his parents, Fahed and Badiah Totah Hishmeh, his siblings, George Hishmeh, Jean DeVore, Mounsour Hishmeh and Laila Hishmeh.
Survivors include his wife Magda Botto Hishmeh of Silver Spring, Maryland, brothers, John Hishmeh of Horse Cave, Kentucky, Anton Hishmeh of Frederick, Maryland, Basem, Raja and Ghazi Hishmeh all of Lexington, Kentucky and many nieces, nephews, cousins and his dog Ace.
Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Our Lady of The Caves Catholic Church in Horse Cave with burial to follow in the Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in the chapel of Winn Funeral Home and 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
