John Richard Butler

John Richard Butler, age 75, of Bardstown passed away Thursday, September 22, 2022 at his home. John began his teaching career as a Resource Room Teacher at New Haven Middle School before moving to Old Kentucky Home Middle School the following year. He taught 8th and 9th grade Social Studies for 26 years. He was an avid reader, an artist, a woodworker, and he loved to hunt rocks. His oil paintings grace the walls of many homes of friends and family as a reminder of who he was.

John was born in Joliet, Illinois to Henry Harrison and Rose Catherine Butler who preceded him in death; also preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Butler, of Kessinger, Ky.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Gossett Butler; his daughter, Jean Ann Butler Roberts (Phillip), of Bardstown, Ky; one step-daughter, Dinah Butler, of Louisville, Ky; seven grandchildren, Samantha Roberts Mattingly (Jared), of Bardstown, Taylor Roberts, of Bardstown, Courtney Roberts Curtsinger (Justin), of Bardstown, Eion Roberts, of Bardstown; Danielle Butler, of Louisville, Shauntelle Butler, of Louisville, Shakera Butler, of Louisville; three great-grandchildren, Devin and Vivian Mattingly, of Bardstown and Wesley Warren, of Louisville; three sisters, Joann Butler Srygler (Jack), of Bonnieville, Mary Beth Butler Bunnell, of Munfordville, Cathy Butler, of Munfordville; one brother, Donald Butler (Janice), of Cave City; many nieces, nephews, and a long time friend and colleague, Darrell Witten.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any Hospice facility of your choosing.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022 at 1 PM at Winn Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 PM on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at Winn Funeral Home and from 10 AM until time of servivce on Monday.
