Bertie L. Atwell age 75 of Rowletts, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law after an extended illness. Bertie was a Hart County native and a former cook at Mammoth Cave National Park Concessions. She enjoyed horse racing and loved spending time with her family and friends.
Bertie was preceded in death by her parents; Ireton Nichols and Annie Lucille Ballard Nichols; father of her children, Buford Atwell and long time companion, James Stephenson.
Survivors include her son, Billy Atwell (Lorrie) of Rowletts; her daughter, Lisa Atwell (Michael) of Cave City; 4 grandchildren, Stacey Dille (Barry) of Munfordville, Steven Atwell of Rowletts, Melissa Tobin of Cave City and Austin Atwell of Rowletts; 2 great-grandchildren, Morgan Atwell, Jaxson Dille and a special step-great-granddaughter, Hallie Jones; 6 brothers and sisters, Willie Nichols (Mary Ann) of Bon Ayr, Ky., Eva Matthews (Bobby) of Horse Cave, Zada Vincent of Horse Cave, Tommy Nichols of Horse Cave, Minnie Cahoe (Cecil) of Cave City and Sheila Carnahan of Leitchfield, Ky.. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and her faithful companion, Piglet.
Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015 in the chapel of Winn Funeral Home with burial in the Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation 4:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 9:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.
