Luz Doris Rosa Davis (Mimi) passed away June 13, 2017. She was born August 21, 1922. Luz Doris is the daughter of the late Ismael Rosa and Antonia Roman Rosa of Isabela, Puerto Rico. There she attended elementary and high school where she learned English as well as her native language, Spanish. Mrs. Davis graduated Isabela High School in 1940; she went on to attend a Presbyterian school, Park University College in Parkville, Missouri. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in 1944, she attended the University of Tennessee where she obtained a Master’s Degree in 1946. During her time in Knoxville, she married the late George A. Davis in 1946. They visited Puerto Rico often.

Mrs. Davis was a member of Phi Lambda Theta, Horse Cave Women’s Club, International Club of Glasgow, American Association of University Women and the United Methodist Church. She taught school for 33 years; 29 years at Caverna Elementary, where she retired in 1985. She was a member of the Kentucky Education Association and the Hart County Retired Teachers Association. After retiring, she was a substitute teacher for the Caverna and Hart County school systems. She started a Spanish program at Hart County and taught for six years. In 1998, she began teaching Spanish to all K-3 children within the Hart County School district; 1999-2000 she taught Spanish at LeGrande and Memorial School. She was also a translator for the Hart County Migrant Office to help Spanish speaking citizens and their families until 2004. During 2007-2008, at the age of 85, she tutored children that needed help with phonics and reading. For 62 years, Mrs. Davis enjoyed teaching adults and children; her passion was teaching children how to read.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her two children, daughter Anelle Rosa Melloan (Bobby) and son Mark A. Davis (Kim); six grandchildren Aaron D. Meredith, Mark Alan Meredith, Alecea Davis Hawkins (Josh), Emily Davis Addington (Brian), Jacob Thomas Davis (Emily), Brian Alan Melloan (Becca);  eight great-grandchildren Samuel Aaron Meredith, Benjamin Allan Meredith, Johnathan Renzo Meredith, Kennedy Smith Hawkins, Davis Leigh Hawkins, Tristan Scott Addington,Taylor Shea Addington and Garrett Conley Melloan; three great great grandchildren Daniel Lee Meredith, Samuel Thomas Meredith and Jaxton Eli Meredith.

She is also survived by two sisters Emma Banuchi and Alicia Hau and one brother Ismael Rosa of Puerto Rico, along with 10 nieces and nephews of Puerto Rico.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband George A. Davis, great grandson Christopher Alan Meredith and a niece Alicia Emma Ruiz.

Doris visited Puerto Rico for 50 years and always kept in touch hoping for the day when they would become the 51st state of the United States of America.

Cremation has been chosen by the family.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:15 a.m. at Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery, under the direction of Winn Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the chapel of Winn Funeral Home.
